Anniversary invitations

Anniversary party invitations.

A tenth, a fiftieth, or any year worth filling a room for. One link out, and the numbers come back on their own.

A milestone anniversary is the one occasion here that somebody else usually organises. Grown up children book the room, write the invitation and chase the replies, on behalf of two people who would not have made a fuss themselves.

That changes what the invitation has to do. It is written by the hosts about the couple rather than by the couple about themselves, and it goes to a guest list spanning four generations, some of whom will read it on a phone held at arm's length.

One link handles all of that. It resizes itself to whatever it is opened on, it can be forwarded by anybody to anybody, and every reply lands in one place instead of across three phones belonging to three siblings.

What changes

What an anniversary invitation has to handle.

A number, a host line that is not the couple, and the widest guest list of any occasion on this site.

  • The number is the headline

Fifty years is the entire reason for the party, so it belongs at the top of the invitation in the largest thing on it. Not in a line of small print underneath the address.

  • The children are often hosting

Say so plainly. "Their children invite you" tells a guest whose party it is and, just as usefully, who to reply to and who to ring if they are running late.

  • Four generations on one guest list

Some of them are on a laptop and some on a phone at arm's length. A page that sets its own size is the only format that suits both, and it saves anybody having to read a card out over the telephone.

  • Presents, and what to ask for instead

A couple married fifty years needs nothing at all. Asking for no gifts, or naming something worth giving to, is the line guests are most grateful for and the one most often left off.

Wording

One that works.

Written by the hosts, which is who usually sends this one.

Fifty years ago

John and Mary Ellis were married.

Their children invite you to lunch to mark it

Sunday the nineteenth of July at one o'clock

The Bell, Sandford

Your company is the present.

The designs

Six to choose from.

Every one of them is a real invitation you can open, not a picture of one. Change the colours, the paper and the type on any of them.

Questions

Asked and answered.

What people ask when the day is a celebration rather than a ceremony.

Lead with the number of years and the couple, then say who is hosting, then the date and the place. If the children are arranging it, that line should come before the detail rather than after it.

The tenth, twenty fifth, fortieth, fiftieth and sixtieth are the ones people gather for. Any year is a reason if there is somebody willing to organise it, and the invitation reads exactly the same.

The link opens in any browser, so most will manage it. For the few who will not, print the page or read it to them over the telephone and enter their reply yourself, which takes about ten seconds.

Usually yes, and it is better said warmly than formally. "Your company is the present" does the whole job in five words and nobody has ever taken it badly.
